2025. At the end of August 2025, we started the concrete works for phase II of the southern substructure of the Rail Baltica Ülemiste terminal. Our scope is now complete, with the concrete structures within the nearly one-kilometre-long construction section completed.
The total volume of work included:
- 14,000 m³ of cast-in-situ concrete,
- 2,000,000 kg of reinforcing steel,
- 48,000 m² of formwork,
- including nearly 13,000 m² of exposed A-class concrete surfaces.
Our scope included retaining walls, pedestrian and tram tunnels, substations and technical rooms, staircases, lift shafts, ramps and other reinforced concrete structures, as well as works required for the platforms and other terminal structures.
The architectural design of the Ülemiste terminal was developed by Zaha Hadid Architects, with demanding aesthetic and technical requirements for the exposed concrete surfaces. Formwork layouts, tie-hole patterns and the coordination of concrete surfaces with window, façade and steel structures had to be resolved already during work preparation and formwork design.
One good example is a detail where the formwork plywood panel layout is precisely aligned with the window profile and the centreline of the steel column. Achieving this level of precision requires close coordination of the entire process (from the structural design and BIM model to formwork, reinforcement and concreting technology).
At the most active stage of the project, nearly 120 construction workers together with subcontractors and 10 project, site and work managers were working on site. For our team, the project also provided valuable practical experience in delivering structures designed in a BIM-based environment, where model-based preparation and detailed coordination were closely integrated with day-to-day construction.
Construction of the Ülemiste terminal now continues with the next contractors. We thank the teams of KMG Infra OÜ and Merko Eesti, as well as the Rail Baltica client team, for the good cooperation.
