Concrete frame of Espoontori shopping centre rising fast

Espoontori

Maru Betoonitööd is building the above-ground concrete structures for the extension of the Espoontori shopping centre in Espoo, Finland. Kesko’s development project includes the construction of a new K-Citymarket hypermarket and a thorough renovation of the nearly 40-year-old shopping centre. The total scope of the project is approximately 55,000 gross square metres. The new K-Citymarket is planned to open at the end of 2028.

Maru Betoonitööd started work on site at the beginning of August 2026, and the works will continue until spring 2027. Our scope covers the load-bearing structures above the foundations in the car park, the new part of the shopping centre, and the office spaces.

Key quantities:

  • Concrete: over 8,000 m³
  • Formwork: approx. 32,000 m²
  • Reinforcement: approx. 800 tonnes
  • Slabs: approx. 25,000 m²
  • Precast concrete elements to be installed: 770 pcs

The above-ground concrete structures comprise cast-in-situ concrete columns and walls, and slabs built with post-tensioned beams. The scope also includes the installation of precast elements and grouting of their joints. Most of the approx. 25,000 m² of slabs are post-tensioned concrete slabs, built in both the car park and the shopping centre. In addition, the works include the installation of partition and external wall elements and the post-tensioning of the slabs.

Our work covers the planning and execution of formwork, reinforcement and concreting, as well as works related to element installation. The package also includes concrete supply and technical pre-planning of the works. Our formwork systems partner is PERI Suomi, concrete is supplied by Rudus and post-tensioning is carried out by Naulankanta. The main reinforcement suppliers are Kaunas Metal and Exmet. For fixings and connection components, our key partner is Peikko.

The client is Kesko, and Haahtela is responsible for project management. Daily cooperation with Haahtela covers work planning, schedule coordination and the alignment of different construction phases.

The key work phase on site is the construction of the slabs. This, however, also requires the columns and walls to be completed and the elements to be installed in the right sequence. Thanks to close cooperation with the client and the project management team, the works have progressed at a brisk pace in line with the planned schedule. As the project is creating a new landmark in the centre of Espoo, planning the logistics of material deliveries, storage and concreting amid heavy traffic is especially important.
