In May, we began reinforced concrete work on an extension to a historic swimming pool in the city of Kouvola, Finland. The client is Rakennusliike U. Lipsanen Oy, and this marks Maru Betoonitööd’s first collaborative project with this general contractor, as well as the next step in expanding our geographic reach and customer base.
Our scope of work includes over 3,000 m³ of monolithic reinforced concrete structures: foundations, retaining walls, a shelter, stairwells and elevator shafts, the building’s load-bearing frame, a 50-meter-long indoor swimming pool, and a smaller cold-water pool, along with their associated structures. In addition, we will install approximately 800 concrete elements, including columns, ceiling and wall elements, and grandstand structures.
A distinctive feature of the project is the integration of the swimming pool being renovated and the existing building section with a new structure, which includes not only a competition pool but also a multifunctional pool and a 500-seat grandstand. We have previously built swimming pools as well as sports and public buildings, but the Kouvola swimming center is the first large-scale swimming complex where we are carrying out structural work in Finland as a turnkey project.
To ensure a smoother workflow and mitigate potential lifting and logistics risks in confined working conditions, it has been decided in consultation with the general contractor that the structural framework work will be carried out using a tower crane.
