Maru Betoonitööd has gained momentum with the construction work on the Ülemiste Terminal. We began work at the end of August 2025, and as of today, work is underway along the entire construction section, which is nearly one kilometer long. This is a technically complex and logistically very demanding project, where work is being carried out alongside active rail and city traffic.
By the end of this year, we will have constructed approximately 5,000 m³ of various concrete structures at the site. Our scope of work includes retaining walls, pedestrian and tram tunnels, substations, and other technical rooms, as well as numerous other reinforced concrete structures. Preparatory work for the construction of the platforms is also underway. Before Christmas, we will pour the concrete slab for the connecting tunnel linking the Ülemiste district with the city center, which will also serve as the deck slab for the railway viaduct.
The Ülemiste Terminal is a future international transportation hub that will connect the Rail Baltica high-speed rail line with the domestic Edelaraudtee rail network. The terminal is scheduled for completion in 2028, and construction will take place on the main freight and Edelaraudtee rail lines, which will remain in active use throughout the entire process; Ülemiste Station will remain operational during the entire construction period. This places high demands on the construction project in terms of both work planning and safety.
The property is located in an area with extremely heavy traffic—between Tallinn’s two largest shopping centers and in the immediate vicinity of the Ülemiste City business district. Traffic is particularly heavy in the run-up to the holidays, when train traffic, car traffic, and streams of pedestrians all converge. In such an environment, carrying out the work requires precise timing and smooth cooperation among all parties involved.
We have made good progress on the project thanks to the professional team of experienced engineers and foremen at Maru Betoonitööd, as well as the excellent cooperation with the site teams of the general contractors KMG and Merko, with whom the work was thoroughly prepared well in advance.
The Ülemiste Terminal is set to become one of the most significant new landmarks in Tallinn’s cityscape. The architectural design was created by Zaha Hadid Architects in the United Kingdom and sets high aesthetic and technical standards for the concrete structures. We are constructing exposed concrete surfaces in accordance with the precise instructions of the architects and the Rail Baltica client, taking into account the formwork divisions, the pattern of the rebar holes, and the harmony of the concrete surfaces with the facade and steel structures.
