The National Defense Investment Center (RKIK), together with AS Maru Metall and MDSC Systems OÜ as joint bidders, signed a seven-year framework agreement for the procurement of mobile field hospitals and mobile communication nodes for the Estonian and Lithuanian defense forces.
The first-ever framework agreement for mobile field hospitals and triage stations will allow for the ongoing placement of orders for the systems and their upgrades, while also ensuring repair, maintenance, and development work, as well as the user training required for medical units. The total cost of the joint Estonian-Lithuanian framework procurement for mobile field hospitals over seven years is 150 million euros.
“In early October, we placed an order for the design and construction of a mobile field hospital for the Defense Forces’ 2nd Infantry Brigade. Currently, only the 1st Infantry Brigade has a field hospital, but our goal is for both brigades to have a modern, mobile military medical field hospital, which will enable them to provide professional medical care both during exercises and in emergency and crisis situations,” said Maia Prunt, Category Manager for Soldier Equipment and Life Support at RKIK.
A new mobile field hospital will be completed in 2026. It will be used to provide medical support to the 2nd Infantry Brigade in the areas of emergency medicine, emergency surgery, intensive care, nursing care, and outpatient care. Equipment that meets modern medical standards and the working environment being created will enable the provision of medical care at the level required in Estonia. The field hospital will provide medical logistics both for itself and for other medical units within the Infantry Brigade, including the supply of sterile surgical materials and medical oxygen, which can be produced on-site. In addition, the unit is self-sufficient in generating electricity and producing clean water when necessary. The new hospital will also feature a sanitation module with restrooms and shower facilities.
MDSC Systems has 10 years of experience in manufacturing mobile—that is, quickly deployable and collapsible—field hospitals. The company’s mobile field hospitals have proven their worth on the battlefield in Ukraine by saving lives, and a field hospital manufactured by MDSC Systems for the Estonian Defense Forces was also in use in Kuressaare during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Kristjan Kamdron, a member of the MDSC Systems board, the long-term contract with RKIK allows the company to focus on product development in order to contribute even more to Estonia’s defense capabilities. “This is the largest contract our company has ever signed, and it demonstrates trust,” Kamdron said. He added that over the past few months, MDSC Systems has been gradually transferring production to a new, energy-efficient factory building located in Männiku, Tallinn.
MDSC Systems and Maru Metall are part of the Maru Group, a construction and manufacturing conglomerate founded in 1991 and operating with entirely Estonian capital. MDSC Systems is primarily known under the Maru Defence and Rolling Unit brands, which produce mobile solutions for both the Estonian and global markets.
