Last weekend, a steel truss manufactured at the Maru Metalli<\/a> factory arrived at the construction site of Tallinn Reaalkool\u2019s new building; it is believed to be the largest single-piece steel structure in Tallinn\u2019s history. A video taken at night and early in the morning shows the truss arriving on Tallinn\u2019s Estonia Boulevard\u2014which had been closed to traffic\u2014and being hoisted into place. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In total, Maru Metall produced five similar steel trusses. These 30-meter-long and 5-meter-high metal giants will literally play a load-bearing role in the school building\u2014the four stories of the building will be constructed on top of them. Below them lies a unique auditorium and a space that will serve as a gymnasium; although this space is underground, natural light streams in through the glass facade in front of the monumental amphitheater. The design calls for the ceiling of this space to also be supported by the aforementioned trusses. This is a unique architectural solution. The steel trusses will later be largely invisible to the school community, as most of them will be integrated into the walls, ceilings, and floors. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cIn the new school building, essentially the entire structure rests securely on these trusses,\u201d explained Heiti Zukovits, CEO of Maru Metalli, who noted that despite nearly 30 years of experience, the company had never before manufactured such a massive single-piece steel structure. Despite their size, the attachment points for the trusses had to be measured with an accuracy of two millimeters at Maru Metalli\u2019s Ardu plant to ensure that the structure would lock into place correctly when lifted into position by a crane. <\/p>\n\n

Those in attendance were also able to see just how precise the navigation required for the truss installation had to be to ensure that the landscaping remained undamaged. The general contractor brought in a crane with a lifting capacity of 700 metric tons to lift the 46-metric-ton truss from the street over the tall trees to the construction site. As a result, Estonia Boulevard had to be closed in the city. While it took 11 hours to set up the crane and the lifting work was completed in half an hour, welders at the Maru Metalli factory spent more than 1,000 hours on each truss. That is nearly half of one employee\u2019s annual working hours. <\/p>\n\n

The new school building for Tallinn Reaalkool will be the same height as the adjacent existing building\u2014that is, four stories. A gallery will connect the two buildings. Construction, which began last year, is scheduled for completion in 2026. The architects of the building are Karli Luik, Johan Tali, Harri Kaplan, and Ann Kristiin Entson from the architectural firm Molumba. The general contractor for the project is Nordlin Ehitus. <\/p>\n\n
